How to eat to beat the winter blues

Why let the cold weather and short days get the better of you? With the right fuel inside you, it’s easy to stay fit, healthy and on fighting form. And that means you’ll be starting the new season off with some great performances...

Lift your spirits and energy levels by making sure you hit your five a day target. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables for extra taste and vitamins. And don’t forget – eating more fruit will boost both your vitamin C levels and immune system, keeping those nasty bugs and germs at bay.

Protein perfection
Swimmers need good sources of protein to stay lean and mean in the swimming pool. Chicken’s a great source and is low on fat to boot. Try a warming winter chicken casserole with lots of root vegetables and crusty wholemeal bread for extra fibre. And there’s no need to skimp on protein if you’re a veggie. Lentils taste great in soup and are high in protein, fibre and vitamin B1 for more energy. Or try good old-fashioned baked beans on toast for an easy winter lunch.
